Why did Aviators wear silk scarves?
The reason behind a scarf is quite simple, going back 100 years, the planes were wide open and the icy winds would blow down the neck of the pilots coats. To wear a coat with a high fitting collar would restrict the motion of the neck making it difficult to look all around, but if they used a scarf of wool, linen, cotton or leather the fabric would chaff the tender skin around the neck
So the answer was silk. Soft but with a wonderful tight weave so it could block the wind whilst still allowing full neck movement against the silky fabric
Today there may be many modern fabrics which could do the job, but in early aviator days there was only one choice - Silk
