Did you know that in the middle of the 4th millennium BCE the first linen fabrics which had been used for ceremonial pocket squares were found at Hierakonpolis, Egypt
By 2,000 BCE some wealthy Egyptians carried the first true pocket squares which were made of bleached white linen, silk was available, but in very limited quantities so only the highest ranked nobles would have had silk handkerchiefs
It is also believed that King Richard the Second helped to popularize handkerchiefs in England circa 1390
During Tudor and Stuart times printed limited edition pocket squares became collectors items, (I'm sure they would have loved some of these designs!) and during the Victorian era people would hang silk hankies from their back pockets
There is an old Irish proverb showing their pholosophy on pocket squares which is 'Always carry a pocket square to show, and a handkerchief to blow'
